Male brain may continue maturing until age 32, neurologist says

Brain development does not end with adolescence, according to neurologist Dr. Oğuzhan Onultan, who said emerging neuroscience research suggests that regions responsible for decision-making and impulse control in the male brain may continue to mature into the early 30s.

The male brain may continue developing well beyond physical adulthood, according to recent neuroscience research. Experts say brain regions involved in planning, decision-making, impulse control and social behavior can continue maturing into the early 30s. Scientists emphasize, however, that brain development varies considerably among individuals and should not be interpreted as a fixed biological deadline.

The male brain may continue maturing into the early 30s, reflecting the prolonged development of brain regions responsible for executive functions such as planning, decision-making and impulse control, according to neurologist Dr. Oğuzhan Onultan.

Speaking about recent advances in neuroscience, Onultan said human development extends far beyond physical growth and hormonal changes.

“Recent neuroscience research has shown that the brain continues to develop and reorganize during adulthood. Brain regions responsible for planning, rational decision-making, impulse control and social behavior may require considerably more time to reach full maturity than physical development.”

The neurologist pointed to the prefrontal cortex—the area of the brain responsible for executive functions—as one of the last regions to fully mature. Scientific studies suggest that structural and functional development of this region may continue into the early 30s in many men, with some research estimating an average maturation age of around 32 years.

Researchers caution, however, that this figure represents a population average rather than a biological milestone applicable to every individual. Genetics, education, lifestyle, environment and overall health all influence how the brain develops over time.

Scientists also emphasize that the brain remains capable of adapting throughout life through a process known as neuroplasticity. Learning, physical activity, social interaction and cognitive stimulation can all strengthen neural connections well into adulthood.

Although several neuroimaging studies have found sex-related differences in the timing of brain maturation, experts stress that these differences should not be interpreted as indicators of intelligence, competence or emotional maturity. Individual variation is substantially greater than differences observed between males and females.

    Why It Matters

Understanding how the male brain develops may help improve approaches to education, mental health and preventive healthcare for young adults. Neuroscientists say the findings reinforce that brain development is a gradual and highly individualized process rather than one that ends abruptly after adolescence.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the male brain really develop until age 32?

Some neuroimaging studies suggest that the prefrontal cortex in many men continues to mature into the early 30s. However, the exact timing varies widely among individuals and should not be considered a fixed biological endpoint.

Which part of the brain matures last?

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for planning, judgment, decision-making and impulse control, is among the last brain regions to reach full maturity.

Does brain development stop in adulthood?

No. Thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain continues forming and reorganizing neural connections throughout life in response to learning, experience and environmental factors.

Are women and men fundamentally different in brain development?

Research suggests there may be average differences in the timing of brain maturation, but scientists emphasize that individual variation is much greater than sex-based differences. Brain development cannot be used to generalize behavior or cognitive abilities.
