    Researchers at Bursa Technical University (BTÜ) have launched a project to develop a royal jelly-based treatment for diabetic foot ulcers, aiming to accelerate wound healing and reduce the risk of infection and limb amputation.

    A research team at Bursa Technical University is developing a novel wound dressing using royal jelly-derived extracellular vesicles for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Supported by the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB), the project aims to promote tissue regeneration, stimulate new blood vessel formation, and improve wound healing in people with diabetes.

    Researchers at Bursa Technical University (BTÜ) have launched a project to develop a royal jelly-based treatment for diabetic foot ulcers, one of the most serious complications of diabetes. The initiative is supported by the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB) and focuses on creating a locally developed biomedical wound dressing.

    Targeting chronic diabetic wounds

    Diabetic foot ulcers are among the leading causes of infection, hospitalization, and lower-limb amputation in people living with diabetes. The BTÜ research team, led by Assoc. Prof. Gökçe Taner from the Department of Bioengineering, aims to develop a treatment that accelerates healing while reducing complications associated with chronic wounds.

    Royal jelly meets biotechnology

    The project combines royal jelly-derived extracellular vesicles (RJEVs) with a photocurable GelMA hydrogel to create an advanced wound dressing. Researchers plan to isolate naturally occurring nano-sized vesicles from high-quality royal jelly produced in Bursa and incorporate them into the hydrogel.

    Once applied to the wound, the gel is designed to gradually release bioactive substances that support tissue repair, promote angiogenesis, reduce infection risk, and stimulate cellular regeneration.

    Research remains at the development stage

    The investigators emphasize that the project is currently in the research and development phase. Its objective is to produce an innovative biomaterial for diabetic wound care, and further laboratory and preclinical studies will be required before any potential clinical use in patients.

    Why It Matters

    Royal jelly-based treatment research could contribute to new therapeutic approaches for diabetic foot ulcers, a major cause of disability and healthcare costs worldwide. While the technology remains experimental, developing locally produced advanced wound-care materials may help expand future treatment options if safety and effectiveness are demonstrated through further research.
