The organs of a 45-year-old man declared brain-dead after a drowning incident in Türkiye’s Giresun province have been recovered for transplantation, offering hope to four patients awaiting life-saving organ transplants.

Organ donation following the confirmation of brain death has provided a new opportunity for four patients on Türkiye’s national transplant waiting list. Health officials said the donor’s family consented to organ donation, allowing the organs to be allocated through the country’s national transplant coordination system.

The organs of a 45-year-old man who was declared brain-dead after a near-drowning incident in Türkiye’s northern province of Giresun have been recovered for transplantation, following his family’s decision to donate his organs.

After brain death was confirmed in accordance with national medical protocols, specialist transplant teams carried out an organ procurement procedure. The donated organs were then transferred through Türkiye’s National Organ and Tissue Transplant Coordination System for allocation to compatible recipients.

    Family’s decision enables organ donation

Health officials said the family’s consent made it possible for the donation process to proceed, providing a potential lifeline for four patients awaiting transplantation.

The liver and kidneys were recovered during the operation. According to hospital officials, one of the donated organs is expected to benefit two separate recipients, bringing the total number of potential transplant recipients to four.

Brain death is medically and legally recognized as death

Medical experts emphasize that brain death is the irreversible and complete loss of all brain function. It is legally and medically recognized as death and differs fundamentally from coma or a vegetative state.

In Türkiye, brain death is determined by a team of qualified physicians according to nationally established medical criteria before organ donation can proceed.

    Organ donation remains critically important

Thousands of patients in Türkiye continue to wait for organ transplants each year. Health authorities say a single organ donor can save or significantly improve the lives of multiple patients, underscoring the importance of increasing public awareness and encouraging voluntary organ donation.

    Why It Matters

Organ donation remains the only effective treatment option for many patients with end-stage organ failure. Each successful donation has the potential to save several lives, while greater public awareness and family support for organ donation can help reduce transplant waiting times and improve patient outcomes.
